School Garden

A number of years ago, the Cashel Community Garden Group, Aimsir Bia, led by Mary Barron and Annie Dalton set up a school garden in our school grounds. As a result of many, many hours of hard work by the members of Aimsir Bia the school now has four raised beds which are cared for by the pupils, teachers and William, our school caretaker and numerours fruit trees have also been planted around the school grounds.

Under the guidance of Annie and Mary the girls and teachers from all classes have learnt how to plant fruit, vegetables and flowers and the school garden is part of the Geography and Science Curriculum for all pupils from first to sixth class.

First, second, third and sixth classes are assigned one of the raised beds each year. Each class is responsible for taking care of their own raised bed (planting, watering, weeding etc.)

It is hoped that each year first class will grow onions, second class will grow broad beans and carrots, third class will grow sunflowers, lupins and green manure and fifth class will grow pumpkins. In addition to the beds fourth class will grow potatoes in grow bags and sixth class will care for the pumpkins in Autumn and harvest strawberries and gooseberries.

Each classroom has its own compost bin emptied into the large compost bins in the garden (looked after by the sixth class help team) and this compost is used to nourish the raised beds. Water is taken from the water butts on the school grounds to water the beds.

With the help of Sean Laffey we have a greenhouse constructed from plastic bottles and used for seedlings. Sean also assists third class each year in the construction of a wormery.

Using money received form the Green School Committee we have purchased some garening tools for the children to use.

The children thoroughly enjoy their time in the garden and are learning so much.
