St John The Baptist Girls School, Old Road Cashel Co Tipperary

History

In 1826/27 a convent was built on Friar Street for the Bridgidine Sisters who were to undertake the education of girls in Cashel. The project failed but on the 9th November 1830, two Presentation Sisters came from Thurles to run the schools. The Presentation Primary School for girls opened on 31st January 1831.

The cutstone building at the convent gate was built in 1860/61 and it was opened as a national school in April 1861. There were 226 children on the roll. The number had increased to 435 by 1863. The school was extended in 1955 and by 1970 a further extension was required. At the same time the boys school in the town also needed up-grading. The Department of Education decided to build all the required primary schools on the on campus. The site for the school was aquired by the arduous work of Dean Christopher Lee, P.P., V.G., and building began in July 1982.

On the 9th November 1983 the Presentation Primary School for Girls was transferred from Friar Street to St. John the Baptist School Complex on the Old Road. In 1999, the Presentation Girls' Primary School transferred to parish trusteeship and was renamed St. John the Baptist Girls' Primary School.
