Seachtain na Gaeilge

Our school is very comitted to encouraging and stimulating the Irish language on a daily basis. To further promote the Irish language, a great effort is made during Seachtain na Gaeilge which takes place durig the first or second week of March every second year.

The following are just some of the activities undertaken:

  • The whole school is decorated with symbols of our Irish heritage and traditions for that week - leprechauns, shamrocks, posters etc.
  • Irish music can be heard wafting from the "halla" every morning.
  • Each class grouping eg. Juniors, 1st & 2nd etc. perform either a song, poem, tin-whistle tune etc. on their designated morning in assembly.
  • In class pupils are encouraged and rewarded with tickets (ticeidi) and stars in recognition of any valiant effort to use their "cupla focal" during the day - even outside in the playground. A draw takes place on the final day of the week with lots of prizes and goodlies to be won.
  • Teachers endeavour to incorporate many aspects of our culture in their lesson content for this week. Traditionsl Irish dances and songs are taught along with an array of poems, stories, folklore and dramatic activities.
  • The whole week culminates with the La Gaelach on the final Friday. What an amazing day this is! Pupils and teachers come to school dressed in our National colours. It is a fun-filled day of activities all "as Gaeilge" including Biongo, Scealaiocht, Deil O Ghradaigh, Treasure Hunt and many, many more.
  • Classes from third to sixth class get together in the halla for a nail-biting Trath na gCeist - a tale quiz comprised of mixed teams from third to sixth classes. Teams are competing for the coveted prize - the fantastic "Conradh na Gaeilge" perpetual Trophy which was so generously presented to the school. Winners and runners-up as keepsakes.
  • The La Gaelach culminates with the Ceili Mor whe the halla is rocked by the Siege of Ennis, The Walls of Limerick & The Haymaker's Jig to name but  a few of the traditional dances taught during teh week.
  • We have also, on numerous occasions, invitedy novelty guests to join us on our La Gaelach eg. Giggles An Fear Grinn (the clown), Irish story-tellers and even drama groups, all of whom add to the enjoyment of the day and help to foster and promote the Irish language in an exciting and fun-filled way.

It is no wonder, then that Seachtain na Gaeilge and An La Gaelach are eagerly awaited every second year.

Gan dabt ar bith, mol an oige agus tiocfaidh si!

Bhain Rang 6 sult as gníomhaíochtaí Seachtain na Gaeilge. They enjoyed a table quiz, drama, games and a treasure hunt "as gaeilge". They also led the school's very own St. Patrick's Day Parade.  Rinne siad an-iarracht gaeilge a úsáid.
