Book Week

Every second year our school holds a Book Week to coincide with World Book Day, March 5th.

The main aim of Book Week is to encourage children to explore the pleasure of books and reading by providing them with oportunities to talk about books, recommend books to others, listen to stories being read aloud and to read for themselves.

Activities for Book Week are integrated into the curriculum content for each class level and specific book activities are also timetabled for each day throughout the week.

Here are some of the activities which take place during Book Week:

Talk About Your Favourite Book: Pupils are encouraged to bring their favourite book to school and to tell the class about the book.

Reading Buddies: Children in senior classes are paired with children from Junior Classes and each girl reads a book for her Reading Buddy. There is an air of excitement as the Senior Buddies seek out their Junior Buddy.

Book Review: Children write a review for their favourite book using our bookworm template. The book reviews are then displayed in the form of  a "bookworm" in our school.

D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read): Time is allocated each day during the week for quiet reading and enjoyment of books.

Visual Art: activities relating to books are carried out in each class eg. designing a bookmark depicting stories, book titles, book covers etc.

Fancy Dress Day: Children (and teachers) are encouraged to dress up as a character from a book for the day and a fancy dress parade takes place in the school hall.

Book Quiz: Pupils from fourth, fifth and sixth class come together in the halla for a Book week quiz. Mixed teams are put together for this quiz which tests the girls knowledge of books. All of the questions for the book quiz have a book connection.

Book Sale: Pupils are encouraged to bring their unwanted books to school during Book Week. Pupils from each class are given an opportunity to go to the Halla to browse and to purchase books for a nominal fee. Any funds raised go towards purchasing books for the school.

All in all Book Week is a fun-filled week of books and reading!
